In the north, the plains of the Serengeti are home to the largest concentration of wildlife in the world. The most popular park is home to millions of zebra, gazelle, wildebeests, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, and rhino. Arusha National Park is located just a few hours from Arusha, Tanzania’s safari capital. Mount Kilimanjaro, or as the locals call it, Kipoo, is a perfect fit for the determined climber. And while the breathtaking views at the top are priceless, the foot slopes are covered with lush vegetation and are home to the Abbot’s duiker, an endangered antelope. Lake Manyara National Park was described by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa.” Located in the Great Rift Valley in northern Tanzania, this park is best known for its baboons and can easily be seen by jeep in just a few short hours. Tarangire National Park is home to large elephant herds, baobab trees, and African pythons. It is named after the Tarangire River and can be explored on a guided walking safari or on a game drive. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area has been called the eighth wonder of the world with landmarks such as Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Meru, and the indigenous, semi-nomadic Maasai people.
Aside from the national parks, the island of Zanzibar offers yet another memorable backdrop for an African vacation. Scuba diving, swimming with dolphins, deep-sea fishing, and a multitude of water sports can create the perfect active, beach holiday.
